Between the Books

Book Arts Exhibition at Cambridge Central Library

Cambridge Central Library and Great Shelford Library hosted our Book Arts exhibition – Between the Books. The exhibition was a great success entertaining and delighting people of all ages. The artworks were produced by twelve enthusiastic participants who attended our 10 week Book Arts course - Between the Pages. The artworks were displayed in Cambridge Central with the books interwoven amongst the regular collection. Although some visitors didn't have time to find all the books many people enjoyed exploring the library, on the hunt, whilst others were delighted to stumble upon them by mistake. The Book Arts then moved to Great Shelford Library where they were again entwined amongst the regular books. The exhibition had a fantastic response (comments from the comment book included below!) and we are delighted that so many people appreciated the hard work that went into each book.

It was also featured in a lovely blog in December please see the link toWandering the Dream Space

Thank you to course tutor Candida Bradley and all the book artists who contributed for your hard work and enthusiasm.

Exhibition Overview

Following the 10 week course Between the Pages, Between the Books presented an exhibition of the works produced on the course by the tutor and the students.

Book Art is a little known genre of art which is surprisingly rare in Cambridgeshire. Given that Cambridge is such an academic city, full of books and knowledge, it seems strange that one of the creative types, so commonly found in the city, has not seized the opportunity to transform all the local libraries with a wonderful melange of non-conformative 'books'. As this opening is still available, this is exactly what we intend to do! We hope you will enjoy the results.

Since 29 September we have been running a 10-week course in the art of creative book making, meeting every Wednesday evening at the library. Candida Bradley, the tutor, and her team of newly converted Book Artists are making books of all shapes and sizes to share with us in an exhibition, providing a little bit of something different for all book lovers. There will be 20-40 works included, exploring a diverse range of subjects, all displayed amongst the library’s own book collection.

The exhibition will be displayed in Cambridge Central Library between Saturday 11 December and Sunday 9 January. Part of it will then be transferred to Great Shelford Library where it will be displayed until Thursday 10 February.
